Member of the United States Senate’s External Relations Committe, U. S. Senator Richard Lugar stated that the protocols that will be signed by Turkey and Armenia are “historical agreements” for both two countries and the World.

Speaking to AA representative after a conference in Washington, Senator said that an unpleasant debate had been going on between Turkey and Armenia since a long time. Expressing his content on creation of ties that will bring two countries together, Lugar said that he hopes that there would not be any obstacle that would prevent development of relations between two countries.

Lugar said that he welcomes the agreement on establishment of a joint committee of historians to make researches on 1915 events. He said that he is hopeful that the committee will help solution of the disagreement on 1915 events.

“The debate also affects the politics of United States. This issue comes to the agenda of U.S. Congress almost every year. This is not healthy both for us and for our relations with two countries. An agreement on this topic would be a real victory,” said he.
