Member of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE Gultekin Hajibeyli protested double-standard policy of the Council of Europe in her address to the chairman of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers, Slovenian foreign minister Samuel Zbogar. “There are double standards in the Council of Europe. It discusses ban on Russian participation today. Why it doesn't' impose sanctions against Armenia? Armenia is occupying 20 percent of Azerbaijani lands for 15 years, but the Council of Europe doesn't impose any sanction against it”, said Azerbaijani parliamentarian, APA reported. Zbogar said the Council of Europe didn't pursue double-standard policy. “The Council of Europe has same views on both Azerbaijan and Armenia. OSCE Minsk Group addresses the issue of Nagorno Karabakh conflict and we support its efforts. We hope the conflict will be solved soon. I think the Council of Europe can't play important role in the solution of Nagorno Karabakh conflict because it is not within our mandate. The Nagorno Karabakh conflict is a serious issue. I can notice only that the displaced persons from Nagorno Karabakh should return to their homeland”.
Member of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE Ganira Pashayeva also addressed the chairman of the Committee of Ministers. She asked about the Council's indifference to the violation of human rights in Armenia. “Why the Council of Europe doesn't take actions for the prevention of human rights violation in Armenia? Why the Council of Europe doesn't use means of pressure to force Armenia to withdraw its forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan and to allow one million Azerbaijani refugees to return to their homeland?” Samuel Zbogar said human rights situation in Armenia is under the PACE monitoring. “Regarding the Nagorno Karabakh issue, it is a political issue at first and it must be solved with the assistance of international organizations, particularly OSCE Minsk Group. I don't think that the Council of Europe can play important role in the solution of this problem”.
COUNCIL OF EUROPE MUST USE LEVERAGE OF PRESSURE AGAINST ARMENIA:AZERBAIJANI MP
Council of Europe must use its leverage of pressure against Armenia, member of the Azerbaijani delegation to Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) Ganira Pashayeva said in a response to the Chairman of CE Committee of Ministers and Slovenian Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Zbogar at the plenary meeting of the organization on Sept. 29.
“Why CE turns a blind eye to the fact that Armenia being a member organization roughly violates human rights, and the organization does nothing to stop this country? Why does not CE use its leverage of pressure against Armenia to make it to leave the occupied territories and so that more than one million of refugees return to their native land?” MP said during her speech.
“The situation of human rights in Armenia is under PACE monitoring. As to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, it is primarily a political issue. It must be solved through political ways and international organizations, mainly the OSCE Minsk Group. I do not think that the Council of Europe can play a special role in searching political methods to solve the conflict,” chairman of the Committee of Ministers said.
