No document on Nagorno Karabakh will be signed in Chisinau meeting of CIS heads of states, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said in his interview to The Armenian Reporter, APA reported.

“In view of the limited progress we have made on agreeing to very few of the Madrid Document, we are quite far from signing any document at this stage. It will require from both sides long negotiations and, of course, political will. Whether Armenia is blockaded or not, it will not accept a resolution of the Karabakh conflict that would endanger the existence of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh. The idea of the blockade, that Armenia will come to its knees economically and will surrender to the Azerbaijani-Turkish tandem, did not work out in reality,” he said.

“As for whether we are more concession-prone, I will say that our position remains unchanged: the establishment of relations and the end of the blockade are necessary to both sides, and Armenia needs not concede anything to move in that direction. The very fact that we are ready to cooperate with Turkey even before it recognizes the Genocide is incontrovertible evidence of our constructive approach,” he said.

Sargsyan says the key issue in the resolution of the Karabakh conflict is the status of Nagorno-Karabakh.

“The Karabakh Movement began with the issue of status, and only the resolution of this issue can bring an end to the conflict. Armenia has said repeatedly that the people of Karabakh must have the opportunity to determine that status. That is the red line, beyond which the Armenian sides cannot go. It is not subject to negotiation. The hypothetical subordination of Karabakh to Azerbaijan is possible only if the people of Karabakh, through a referendum, choose such a thing. Just how likely that is everyone knows, including the Azerbaijanis,” Sargsyan said.

“OPENING OF BORDERS WITH TURKEY WILL CREATE HEALTHYCOMPETITIVENESS FOR ARMENIA’S ECONOMY”

The opening of Turkish-Armenian borders will create healthy competitiveness for the Armenia's economy, said president of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan in his interview with The Armenian Reporter, APA reported quoting Armenian news agency.

“I frequently spoke about the economic results of the opening the borders. Of course, it will create healthy competitiveness for our economy in the future,” said Sargsyan.

He reminded about the ideas in early years of the independence that Armenia wouldn“t hold out under the pressure of Iranian goods. „There were such ideas in early years of the independence, but the time showed that it was groundless. I think the small countries neighboring with the large ones have such complex. Our producers will get a large market potential. I don“t doubt that our business people will achieve success in this competition. The government will care about the local producers and small businesses.”
