Armenia's Apostolic Church has thrown its weight behind Armenian government's drive to normalize ties with Turkey, with an October 2 statement from a clerical council chaired by Patriarch Garegin II calling for public support of a rapprochement initiative.

The statement calls on Armenians to be 're alistic” and “careful” to “avoid detrimental polarization and cope with current challenges together,” the Kavkazsky Uzel news portal reported. The church statement claimed thatso called Armenian genocidewas an “indisputable fact,” and seperation of Nagorno-Karabakh from Azerbaijan is “irreversible.”Establishing diplomatic ties with Turkey would not change anything concerning these two issues, the statement assured.

Domestic opposition remains strong to proposed protocols governing the normalization process. At public debates on the issue held in parliament, one representative of a non-profit group that opposes the deal pulled out a rope and proposed that pro-government deputies hang themselves after “Turks start flooding into Armenia,” and, she claimed, bring about an end to Armenia's statehood.
