Armenian diaspora is uncomfortable with the Turkish Culture Season in France and especially that Eiffel tower will be lightened with the colours of Turkish flag for a week. Co-ordination Council of Armenian Organizations of France (CCAF) issued a statement and called diaspora Armenians to hold a protest demonstration in front of Eiffel tower on October 7. CCAF stated that Armenian flag was not honoured with such initiative and that they are disappointedabout the attitude of French administration against Turkey.
Co-ordination Council of Armenian Organizations of France said in the written statement, “Lightening the symbol of Paris, Eiffel tower with the colours of Turkish flag is encouraging nationalism. Armenians of Turkey were ’terminated’ for that flag. Greeks, Kurds and other minorities were ’massacred’ under the same flag. The same flag is waving now in Cyprus, on the ’occupied’ lands of European Union.”
More than 400 cultural, social and artistic activities are being held in France between March 2009 and July 2010 within the frames of Turkish Cultural Season in France. Municipality administration of Paris decided to lighten Eiffel Tower with the colours of Turkish flag between October 6 and October 11.
