U. S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will attend the ceremony of signing of the Turkish-Armenian protocols in Zurich, Switzerland on Oct. 10, 2009, Assistant Secretary Philip Gordon told reporters, Interfax reported.

He said Clinton made major efforts to normalize relations between the two countries. “She regularly carried on a correspondence and held phone conversations with the parties.”

Gordon said Turkey-Armenia decision to sign a protocol to establish diplomatic relations was not made easily and oppositions of both countries were protesting this document.

“Both sides understand that the normalization of the relations and opening the borders meet their interests. Both sides have an intention to move forward after long years of tensions and economic isolation of Armenia. We appreciate it as a historic opportunity.”

CNN Turk quoted the US State Department official as saying that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner and EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana will also attend the signing ceremony.
