“Statements by Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan causes surprise and incomprehension,” Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Elkhan Polukhov said commenting a statement Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan made a the 35th UNESCO general conference.

Speaking about cultural monuments in the region, Nalbandian said Armenia’s neighboring countries voice a different approach about preservation of Armenian cultural heritage.

He said Azerbaijan allegedly attempts to get rid of the Armenian heritage.

“All historical monuments regardless of their affiliation with any religion or people have been preserved and are being preserved in Azerbaijan,” Polukhov said.

“Unfortunately, it is impossible to say the same about Armenia where about 180 mosques have been destroyed in the territory of former Yerevan Khanate. About 500 cemeteries, over 900 libraries, museums, music schools, theaters, concert halls were subject to vandalism,” he said.

“If one lists everything that is done by Armenia in the occupied Azerbaijani territories, this list will take a large number of pages,” Polukhov said.

“It is almost impossible to assess the damage caused to the Azerbaijani culture both in Armenia and occupied territories of Azerbaijan. It is so great,” he said.
