Turkish President Abdullah Gul said Turkey and Armenia are not writing history but making history during his meeting with Armenian President Serge Sarkisian, who is in Bursa to watch a football game between the two countries' national teams.

Gul met with Sarkisian before watching the game. These are the first high-level talks since Saturday, when the two countries' foreign ministers signed protocols to pave the way to normalize bilateral ties to put their century-old enmity behind.

The two sides saw that difficult issues could be resolved, Gul told Sarkisian, according to a report by private broadcaster CNNTurk. The current point that was reached by the two governments is positive not only for Turkey and Armenia but for all the countries in the Caucasus.

Sarkisian talked about the tour he took to meet the Armenian diaspora to inform them about the recent developments, according to CNNTurk. He mentioned the difficulties he faced during his talks with the representatives of the Armenian diaspora. Members of the Armenian diaspora, which is estimated to number around 8 million, protested Sarkisian, objecting to the deal he reached with Turkey.

“I did not go on this tour to get their permission,” he said. “I went to inform them about the Armenian government's decision,” he said.

He also said that while some have different opinions about the reconciliation process, most hold a favorable view. He expressed his hope that in time the number of those who support the process will increase.
