Armenia has lowest birth rate among the CIS countries. Chief of the demography department of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs of Armenia Vanic Babajanyan said birth rate dropped 50 percent in 2008 as against indications of 1986, APA reports quoting Armenia Today. 41185 babies were born in 2008 in Armenia while it was 81200 in 1986. Babajanyan said marriages were reduced in recent years, but death rate increased, which caused by emergency situations - earthquake, war, blockade and population leaving the country. According to the travel statistics, more people arrived in Armenia than leavers in 2004—2005, but in 2008, 23 000 more people left the country than arrivals.

The ministry official said demographic processes were under the control of president and government and the country's national strategy includes marriage campaign as well.
