“Today Russia has a rational incentive to resolve the Karabakh conflict. The existence of this conflict reduces Russia’s geopolitical presence in the region, hinders development of profitable relationships with Azerbaijan, reduces opportunity to participate in the lucrative communication projects to the detriment of Russia. So, I think that Russia now has a specific interest in promoting settlement of the Karabakh conflict,” said Azerbaijan political expert Rasim Musabayov, who recently attended the rountable “Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: creating conditions for peace building: Russia's role in Moscow.

Musabayov said representative of the so-called “Nagorno-Karabakh Republic” (Masis Mailyan) also participated at the meeting.

“When chairman of a public council on foreign and security policy of “NKR” Masis Mailyan took the floor, I strongly protested saying that representatives of Azerbaijan will not listen to his demagoguery, after which he was ejected from the room,” Musabayov said.

Musabayov said Russian political expert Kurginyan said during the discussions that “it is beneficial for Russia to preserve the Karabakh conflict and Azerbaijan can expect its settlement only after its supports Russia in its pressure on Georgia.”

Heydar Jamal, Chairman of Russia's Islamic Committee, who also attended the meeting, backed Azerbaijan's stance and spoke about “all hardships that Baku endures adding that Azerbaijan was in a certain “geopolitical bag” which is not true and can not be considered a stance that favors Azerbaijan,” Musabayov said.

“In response, I said not Azerbaijan, but Armenia is in”a geopolitical bag,” Musabayov said.

“Interesting fact about the event is that the Azerbaijani side said “the Madrid principles” must be finalized in order to achieve effective agreements while the Armenian side in every way scolded those principles and was looking for flaws in them,” he said.
