Armenian politicians have already reconciled with the fact that Turkey won’t open borders without Karabakh problem settlement.

“No one doubts that the ratification process of the Armenian-Turkish protocols depends only on progress in the Karabakh settlement,” Alexander Arzoumanian, former Foreign Minister, representative of the oppositional Armenian National Congress, told reporters, says Tert.am.

According to him, the positions of Ankara and Baku lie in the unilateral concessions of the Armenian side.

Speaking of the Madrid principles, he noted that both Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh cannot accept any document drawn on their basis.

Today, according to the opposition leader, the OSCE Ministerial Council may declare assistance to the Madrid principles: “That is, it will be a unified approach of the 55 member- states of the OSCE. The international community sees the settlement of the Karabakh conflict based on the Madrid principles.

Ruben Safrastyan , Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies, National Academy of Sciences and turkologist, agrees with this opinion. According to him, the recent statements by Turkey against Armenia are not something new. “Similar statements are periodically heard not only from Turkish FM Ahmed Davutoglu, but also Prime Minister Recep Erdogan. These statements are part of the diplomatic efforts made by Turkey to use this moment to put pressure on Armenia ,” said Safrastyan during a press conference.

He added that the Turkish side is trying to pump concessions out of Armenia, in particular, in the issue of the Karabakh issue. Safrastyan expressed confidence that by doing so they cannot put pressure on Armenia.

According to the turkologist, similar statements were also targeting the United States.

“They are trying to influence the United States. This is a traditional policy of Turkey ,” he concluded. < Prev   Next >
