JOINT ANNOUNCEMENT ON NAGORNO KARABAKH

Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group Co-chairs, and Foreign Ministers once again discussed resettlement of Nagorno-Karabakh problem in the 17th Ministerial Council of OSCE in Athens, Greece. OSCE MG Co-chairs Russia, France and United States; Azerbaijani and Armenian Foreign Ministers held a meeting in 3+2 form. Following the meeting, ministers announced to the press that Azerbaijan and Armenia will support resolution process around Madrid principles.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, U. S. Deputy Foreign Minister James Steinberg and OSCE MG Co-chairs were present in the meeting. In the joint announcement, it is declared that parties achieved progress in the meetings and they have decided formeetings to be held more often.

Stressing that they will continue their efforts towards establishment of peace and stability in the region, ministers stated that Azerbaijani and Armenian Foreign Ministers confirmed the progress in negotiations and they have will to continue negotiations until they reach resolution of the problem.

“AZERBAIJAN WELCOMES INTENSIFICATION OF MEETINGS”

Speaking to Azerbaijani press, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said that Azerbaijan welcomes intensification of the discussions on resettlement of Nagorno-Karabakh problem. “The positions of parties should get closer for an agreement on basic principles. That will form a basis for the peace agreement,” he said.

Replying a question about whether Armenia’s attitude is constructive or not, Azerbaijani Minister said, “We discussed the form of negotiations. Discussions were not about direct solution of the problem.”
