
Stating that preparatory work initiated for establishment a commercial route between Armenia and Mersin harbour, authorities said that construction of a railway between Mersin and Armenia is on the agenda.
Replying the questions of Agos newspaper, Secretary General of Mersin Chamber of Commerceand Industry, Kadir Dolek said, “Closed borders with Armenia is not towards the interests of both Turkey and Armenia. We hope for opening of borders as soon as possible. And we believe that the borders will eventually be opened.”
Stating that privatization of Mersin Harbour brought a serious vitalization, Dolek said that U.S. and Mediterranean countries use Mersin harbour to reach Middle East and Soviet countries. Dolek claimed that Mersin harbour may soon start to serve for the commerce between Turkey and Armenia.
Dolek said that products that are brought to Mersin harbour is being transported to Iran, Iraq, Syria, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan and other regional countries through land route. Claiming that construction of a railway between Mersin and Armenia is on the agenda, Dolek said that majority of the budget of the Ministry of Transportation will be used for railways.
