“The US policy is so flexible and many-sided that I do not think they would want to lose Azerbaijan.
The assistance to unrecognized regime of Nagorno-Karabakh shows that they want to please both Azerbaijanis and Armenians”, Irina Zvyagelskaya, professor of MGIMO, chief research worker of the Oriental Studies Institute at Russian Academy of Science, told.
She said US policy has always supported the resolution of the conflict on the basis of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, this is their firm stance repeatedly sounded by US presidents and state secretaries.
Yet, they also have some goals in this region, therefore, they need to sweeten the Armenian side and I view the decision of the Congress this way, she said.
“But I think it is naive to expect recognition of Nagorno Karabakh from the United States. They will never take this step. Azerbaijan is an important country in the South Caucasus and I do not rule out that we will soon see a number of steps towards Azerbaijan from the United States”, she said.
As for whether the United States is interested in protraction of the Karabakh conflict, the political scientist answered negatively: “This conflict is a burden for the United States and they want to get rid of it as soon as possible. This can explain the recent intensification of the negotiation process”.
