Diyarbakir, Sur Municipality Administration decided to change the names of three streets.

Sur Municipality Council in Diyarbakir decided to change Direkci street in Hasirli neighbourhood and name it after Armenian writer Migirdich Margosyan. The Municipality Council also changed the name of Pusucu street in Ziya Gokalp neighbourhood and named it after Assyrian writer Naum Faik Palak.

Mayor of Sur, Abdullah Demirbas said that the reason for them to change toponyms is to do something for people of Diyarbakir who have artistic value.

Demirbas said, " We wanted to show our appreciation to Armenian writer Migirdich Margosyan who contributed advertising Diyarbakir by his books. We wanted to do something for our writer who is famous all around the world. In a similar way, we did not forget to honour Naum Faik Palak, another son of Diyarbakir who was an Assyrian. We named the street that he had lived, after his name."

Stressing thatwhat we need the most is democracy and brotherhood, Demirbas said that they informed district governorship on the changes and the changes are approved except the street which will be named after Naum Faik Palak. Demirbas said, “District Governorship stated that they will make researches on whether Naum Faik Palak was a Turkish citizen or not. We do not find this approach fair. Because there are several streets in Turkey that are named after foreigner people anyway.”
