Armenian descent Russian journalist Yuri Simonyan claimed that Iran will increase its influence in the South Caucasus in an important amount.
Nezavisimaya Gazeta columnist Yuri Simonyan wrote that President of unrecognized Abkhazia, Bagapsh struggles for participation of Tehranto the economic projects in the region.
Calling for attention to the bilateral cooperation between Iran and Armenia on the fields of energy and transportation, Simonyan said, “On the other hand, Azerbaijan calls Iran to mediate between Azerbaijan and Armenia for the resolution of Nagorno-Karabakh problem.” Abkhazian leader stated that they held meetings with Tehran administration in Moscow. “It is early for discussing about recognition of Abkhazia by Iran,” Abkhazian leader had said.
Simonyan said that Iran’s investments to the region would be a very important political development if the country may realize initiatives like Turkey does in the region. Stressing that Abkhazia may suffer of assimilation after the influence of Turkey and Iran increase in the region, Simonyan said that Iran has already promised for 1 billion dollars of investment to Georgia.
Simonyan said that the interest of Iran on the region is increased following the progress in the relations between Turkey and Armenia. He said that both Turkey and Iran are aiming to have the role of leading country in the region. Armenian writer said that attitudes of global actors such asUnited States and Russia are also important for the future of the region.
