Evaluating Turkey’s foreign policy in 2009, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that Turkey’s foreign policy is not reactive, but proactive and totalitarian. Reacting to the reports that claim Turkey’s political axis has been shifted, Davutolgu said, “Our axis is centered on Ankara and our horizon is 360 degrees.”
Stating that negotiations towards resolution of the Cyprus problem accelerated in 2009, Davutolgu said that Turkey will continue efforts for a fair solution in the island. Reminding that European Union did not keep her promise to remove isolations against Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Turkish Foreign Minister said, “We are expecting EU to fulfill its promises.”
Stressing that Turkish-U.S. relations strengthened in recent years, Davutoglu called for attention to the “model partnership” concept that is proposed by U.S. President Barack Obama. Commenting also on Turkey’s developing relations with neighbouring countries, Davutoglu said, “Our target is establishment of absolute and comprehensive cooperation with our neighbours. Reminding removal of visa regimes with several countries in 2009, Davutoglu said that the trend will continue in 2010.
Stating that Turkey and Armenia signed protocols and two countries have entered in a period of normalization, Ahmet Davutoglu stressed that Turkey-Azerbaijan relations are one of the most important clauses in Turkish foreign policy and said, “Territorial integrity of Azerbaijan is sacred for us.”
Foreign Minister said that Turkey-Armenia rapprochement is progressing in its nature and will achieve results within its natural progress.
