ARMENIA'S PATH TO GLOBALIZATION PASSES FROM ANKARA

E-mail Print PDF
The relations between Turkey and Armenia, which is one hundred years old, has entered into a process of normalization although such development was not expected. The most important reason that let such a historical development to take place was convenince of international conjuncture. The interests of regional and global powers coincide so rarely. When we consider Turkey-Armenia protocols that Foreign Ministers of two countries signed in Zurich, we realize how international conjucture eased the process. To be able to see the big picture, lets consider the fact that countries (U.S. and Russia), whose relations were strained during the war in Ossetia, were arm in arm during the ceremony of protocols. Armenian economy suffers from the blockade of Turkey and Azerbaijan. Planning to increase its level of prosperity via Turkey, Yerevan administration showed how much risk it can take for this purpose. Other than that, Ankara is also following an active policy against Armenia within the frames of foreign policy principle, "zero problems with neighbours." But what is the motivations of Russia, United States and EU that lead them to support Turkey-Armenia rapprochement? Armenians, the country entered Karabakh 16 years ago with the escort of Russian tanks, came to Switzerland with the company of Russians. BRAVE STEPS OF TWO COUNTRIES WILL CHANGE THE PARADIGMS Of cource convenience of international conjuncture is not enough for resolution of the chronicle problem between Ankara and Yerevan. The burden of process which will provide liberation of Caucasus, is on the shoulders of brave leaders who took the initiative. Opening of borders between two countries will be a compromise by Turkey. On the other hand, Armenia will also compromise on her red lines within the frames of signed protocols. In Armenia, where questioning so called Armenian genocide is one of the greatest taboos, agreement on establishment of a joint historians committee to make researches on 1915 events, is an important step towards peace. As it is know, proposal of establishment of a joint historians committy is Turkey's idea. And for a nation that had built its identity on the so called Armenian genocide, questioning genocide allegations could be considered as questioning current Armenian identity. The move of Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan on accepting establishments of a historians committee is not an easy one. If one wants to learn the meaning of this move, he/she may analyse its meaning for Armenia from the face expression of Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian during the ceremony of protocols. Signing Zurich protocols with Turkey is an important turning point in Armenian history and it is a sign of courage for current Armenian administration. Armenia has announced that the country will accept withdrawal of from five of seven regions around Nagorno-Karabakh. In August 4, Armenia had announced that Armenian armed forces may deoccupy also other regions after parties determine on the Lachin corridor that will connect Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia. We will wait to see the developments following the process of ratification of protocols.
