Russian President Dimitry Medvedev will meet Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan in Sochi today to discuss Nagorno-Karabakh problem.
Ratification of Turkey-Armenia protocols in Turkish Grand National Assembly depends on the progress in the process of resettlement of Nagorno-Karabakh problem. Armenian administration introduced protocols after getting the approval of Armenian Constitutional Court. On the other hand, comments of Armenian Constitutional Court refering to 1915 incidents disturbed Ankara. Getting prepared to ratify protocols in Armenian Parliament in March, Yerevan continues to closely follow the steps of Ankara.
Inclined to approach process of normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia and the process of resettlement of Nagorno-Karabakh problem separately, Moscow is aware that progress in the Karabakh conflict resolution process will facilitate Turkey-Armenia rapprochement. Within the frames of this principle, Russian President Medvedev hosted Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan and discussed Nagorno-Karabakh issue with Armenian leader just after the visit of Prime Minister Erdogan’s visit to Moscow. On the other hand, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held an official visit to Yerevan last week. Russia also sent Chief of the Russian President’s Administration Sergei Naryshkin to Azerbaijan to discuss the Karabakh issue with Azerbaijani officials.
Naryshkin said in Azerbaijan that Russia expects progress in the process of resettlement of Nagorno-Karabakh problem in the Sochi meeting of Presidents. Speaking to Russian press, Naryshkin said, “Aliyev attaches importance to the Russian efforts toward resolution of the problem. We are expecting progress in the meeting that will be held in Sochi, on Monday.”
