Azerbaijani political scientist Araz Alizade said that Ankara and Yerevan will finally ratify the protocols on the normalization of Turkish-Armenian relations signed in Zurich.
"The only obstacle to the process at this stage might be the decision taken by the Constitutional Court of Armenia which runs counter to the protocols signed in Zurich," Alizade said.
"Turkey wants to show Azerbaijan that it will stand till the end. Yerevan, in turn, wants to show the Armenian diaspora that it is also determined to defend its interests. However, the protocols will be ratified. The decision by the Constitutional Court of Armenia will be lifted and the guarantors of this protocol – the USA, Russia and France – will put pressure on Yerevan to give up attempts to have the world recognize the so-called ‘genocide’," Alizade said.
The political scientist commented on Turkey’s promises not to act against the national interests of Azerbaijan.
"The protocol does not contain this paragraph and this is an oral statement. Turkey was not going to set this precondition. But when Azerbaijan criticized this, Ankara understood that it may lose a great deal economically. The economic situation is tough in Turkey.
"On the other hand, the opposition led by the Turkish Republican People's Party and its leader Deniz Baykal made use of this situation, raising protests and explaining to people that their country would lose badly if relations between Azerbaijan and Turkey worsened. This is why Recep Tayyip Erdogan was obliged to speak about Nagorno-Karabakh in order to calm Baku down.
"Serzh Sargsyan, in turn, realized that Yerevan may also lose the support of the Armenian diaspora which would mean death for Armenia which is in a tough economic state. Therefore, Yerevan set a precondition and made a cunning step. While the Constitutional Court of Turkey set no preconditions, the Armenian Constitutional Court did so, as if to soothe the diaspora. But there is another issue.
"Turkey has lost diplomatically as it did not include anything in the documents signed in Zurich. Thus, it showed that it accepts the documents the way they are. Meanwhile, by making amendments, the Armenians have again shown themselves in a negative light."
