Armenia gets prepared to pass a resolution that will authorize Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan for withdrawal of Armenia from Zurich protocols.
Speaking to Wall Street Journal newspaper, Armenian President’s top Foreign Policy Advisor Vigen Sarksyan said that Armenia has introduced Turkey-Armenia protocols to the Armenian Parliament but the country is also preparing a law draft that will enable Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan to withdraw Armenia from protocols.
Stressing that all the positive developments in the region will be lost if the opportunity for ratification of protocols is missed, Vigen Sarksyan said, “From now on, we are in a phase that things will get much more difficult.” Sarksyan said that such development would wreck the established trust between two countries.
Armenia accuses Turkey of not initiating the process of ratification and putting the normalization process into an impasse. Armenian officials had signaled withdrawal of Armenia from Zurich protocols and made statements stressing that Armenia may withdraw from protocols if Turkey does not ratify protocols till March.
The process of normalization of relations between two countries came to a deadlock following the comments of Armenian Constitutional Court on the protocols touching the issues of so called Armenian genocide and Armenia’s land claims. Ankara criticized Armenian Courts detailed ruling harshly and stated that Armenia initiated an operation to change the text of protocols.
Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu had made a phone call to his Armenian counterpart Edward Nalbandian and expressed Turkey’s concerns over Armenian Constitutional Court’s justified ruling. He also informed U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the issue and expressed Turkey’s concerns over the health of process after Armenian courts amateurish statements.
ALIYEV: WE RELY ON TURKEY’S PROMISES TO AZERBAIJAN
According to the report of The Wall Street Journal, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that Azerbaijan believes that Turkey will not ratify Zurich protocols unless Armenia withdraws from occupied lands of Azerbaijan.
Speaking to the American press at World Economy Forum in Davos, Aliyev said that Azerbaijan is pleased with the approach of Turkey to the issue.
Azerbaijan had slammed the policy of Ankara administration after Turkey and Armenia signed protocols in Zurich but had softened its attitude following Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s speech in Azerbaijani Parliament.
