It will be difficult for Azerbaijan to hope for support of Russia or the United States or Europe, Martin Malek.
"Unfortunately, the Karabakh issue has become too complicated and tangled and even superpowers are unable to give certain receipts for the resolution of the conflict.
The recent negotiations in Sochi showed that even Russia cannot find the formula for this conflict settlement for it to meet the demand of both sides", said Martin Malek, research worker of the Austrian Academy of National Defense.
As for whether Turkey’s efforts on the resolution of this conflict may be fruitful, the Austrian political scientist said he does not think this initiative will be effective.
"There have been no changes in Armenia’s position in the past 15 years and it demonstrates no wish to change it now. The recent events show that even the possible opening of the Armenian-Turkish border considering the future economic welfare of this country did not influence the changes in its position".
As for what Azerbaijan should do in this case to return its occupied lands, Malek said "it will be difficult for Azerbaijan to hope for support of Russia or the United States or Europe. Therefore, Baku should be patient in this process and find a formula that could persuade the superpowers of the truthfulness of its position. This is very difficult but Baku should be more active in this direction".
As for Europe’s position on this conflict, the political scientist noted that Europe believes war in this region should be evaded. Therefore, it will continue persuading the sides to disavow the armed way of the conflict settlement.
"Security of energy routes and trade interests is important for Europe in this region, therefore, any tensions are quite undesirable for it".
As for the Nabucco project, Malek said Europe’s enthusiasm in this project has recently declined, therefore, it is very difficult to predict its further destiny.
