President Abdullah Gul held a phone conversation with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
The phone conversation between two Presidents is important since it is held a few days after the meeting of Russian, Azerbaijani and Armenian Presidents in Sochi. Sochi meeting was held to seek a solution for Nagorno-Karabakh problem and Presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia held meetings also with OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs.
Ankara believes that resolution of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will contribute establishment of peace and stability in Caucasus. According to experts, the key of resettlement of the conflict is in the hands of Russia. President Gul had urged leaders of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing countries to accelerate resettlement of the problem. Turkey considers resettlement of the problem not as a “precondition” but as a reality for the continuation of process of normalization of relations with Armenia. Last week, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu discussed Armenia issue in his meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in London. Turkey reacted to the detailed ruling of Armenian Constitutional Courtrelated to the protocols that Turkey and Armenia signed to normalize bilateral relations as it was refering to 1915 incidents as “genocide.”
Sources in Ankara and Moscow stated that President Abdullah Gul and Russian President Medvedev shared opinion on the regional issues. President Gul invited his Russian counterpart to Turkey. The Russian President accepted the invitation and visit will be held on May.
