Opening of border not implying elimination of Russian base in Armenia

Possible opening of Armenian-Turkish border not implying elimination of Russian base in Armenia.

Possible opening of the Armenian-Turkish border with Turkey does not mean elimination of the Russian base in Armenia, according toViktor Krivopuskov, adviser for the Russian embassy in Armenia.

“The opening of borders is a fact of bilateral relations which has nothing to do with a third country. I think the opening of borders and availability of the military base have nothing to do with each other,” Krivopuskov said.

“This is the issue of country’s security and the destiny of the Russian base will depend on the decision of the Armenian people,” Krivopuskov said.

Armenian and Turkish FMs Edward Nalbandian and Ahmed Davutoglu signed “Protocol on establishment of diplomatic relations” and “Protocol on Development of Bilateral Relations” in Zurich on October10. The documents must be approved by the parliaments of both countries after signing.
