Commenting on the process of normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia, General Secretary of Council of Europe said, "It may take time but the first step is made and that will not be the last one."

General Secretary of Council of Europe Thorbjörn Jagland will start to work with Turkey as Turkey will take on the term presidence of the council on November.

Jagland finds Turkey's efforts for establishing good relations with its neighbours very positive and he is hopeful on the normalization of the relations between Turkey and Armenia. Commenting on the issue, General Secretary of CE said, "I do not know what will be the result in short term. I don't know if protocols will be ratified in the parliaments of two countries. There are political obstacles for that. But the first step is made and I am sure that it will not be the last one. Process may take 5-10 and maybe 20 years but Turkey and Armenia are neighbouring countries."

Jagland also commented on the domestic policies of the government and praised efforts for democratic initiative. "Development of social and cultural rights of minorities is a positive approach," said he.
