Yerevan should be first to start ratification of the Armenian-Turkish protocols, vice speaker of the Armenian parliament Samvel Nikoyan told reporters.
He considers that Armenia should continue active policy in the Armenian-Turkish process and be first to start the process of the protocols ratification, in particular, the discussion of protocols in the standing parliamentary commission on foreign relations.
He said Armenia’s initiative on normalizing ties with Turkey has raised its image in the eyes of the international community. “The continuation of such a policy will strengthen Armenia’s positions,” Nikoyan considers. Meanwhile, he said it is incorrect to speak of the definite terms of the documents ratification as they will be dictated by the logic of the ongoing process.
ARMENIAN-TURKISH PROTOCOLS IN CIRCULATION
The speaker of Armenia’s parliament, Hovik Abrahamyan, put the Armenian-Turkish protocols in circulation on Monday.
On the speaker’s order, ratification of the protocols will be discussed by parliament’s standing commission on foreign relations.
The protocols envisage the normalization of bilateral ties and the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border. They were signed in Zurich by Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian and his Turkish counterpart, Ahmet Davutoglu, on 10 October 2009, after a series of talks held with Swiss mediation.
