Logoglu says that there are not any other dynamics in the United States to prevent passage of so called Armenian genocide resolution after Turkey has lost the support of Jewish lobbies.
If the issue that matters was rapprochementbetween the people of two countries and if the mutual interests could be defined at that point, the result would not be like this and process would have progressed on a strong basis.
But that did not happen.
Turkey initiated the process to get rid of genocide allegations, while Armenia for opening of borders and leaving Azerbaijan alone in the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, United States for softening the attitude of Armenian lobbies related to recognition of genocide allegations by United States and Europe for opening of the route of commerce through Middle Asia.
WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT?
Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan stated that Armenia will not bring protocols on the agenda of Armenian parliament before Turkey does. But he has changed his mind and Armenia set off to discuss Turkey-Armenia protocols in the parliament. And after Armenian opposition stood against the protocols, Armenia has decided for establishment of a parliamentary committee that consists of representatives from all political parties for discussing protocols. Discussion of protocols is postponed to the middle of March via this decision. Now the process has locked on the developments in the U.S. related to so called Armenian genocide resolution and on the date, April 24.
Is it necessary to tell that Turkey is not going to make any steps after Prime Minister Erdogan stressed that there will not be any progress in the issue unless significant progress is achieved in the process of resolution of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
What is going to happen now?
I asked this question to an expert, former ambassador of Turkey to US, Faruk Logoglu. Logoglu said, “Since there is no progress in the process, it will be continued in two channels in United States. The speech that Obama will make on April 24 is important. He will probably not use the word ‘genocide’ not to risk relations with Turkey. The other channel is the Congress. Armenian lobby and its political supporters will urge the Congress for passage of the resolution. Their luck is higher now since there is no progress in Turkey-Armenia normalization process.”
Logoglu says that there are not any other dynamics in the United States to prevent passage of so called Armenian genocide resolution after Turkey has lost the support of Jewish lobbies. He does not think that Turkey-U.S. relations will be damaged seriously even if U.S. Congress ratify Armenian resolution. Turkey may close Incirlik airbase as a reaction. But the commercial relations would not be affected.
WHAT HAPPENS IF CONGRESS PASSES THE RESOLUTION?
I am asking to Logoglu, “Therefore, there is no need for this much effort to prevent passage of the resolution from the Congress?
“So called genocide resolution is recognized in several parliaments including France. But there is a colour missing in the picture. The ratification of this resolution will complete the political map. Armenian constitution and declaration of independence do not only refer to international recognition of genocide allegations. Afterwards they will bring the issues of claims of land and compensation.”
Logoglu supports the normalization process and the protocols as he thinks that Turkey should normalize relations with Armenia. “But Turkey should not have attached Karabakh issue. Maybe government received promises from US and Russia and they have relied on that. That was wrong. From now on, Nagorno-Karabakh issue should be priority for Turkey and we should urge U.S. administration for resolution of the problem.” Ferai Tinc/Hurriyet
