The Foreign Affairs Committee of U.S. House of Representatives will hold discussions on so called Armenian genocide resolution on March 4. It is reported that probabilities for the resolution to pass from the committee is high.
Resolution “H.Res. 252” related to recognition of Armenian allegations over 1915 events will be discussed in the Foreign Affairs Committee of U.S. House of Representatives on March 4. Observers state that resolution will most probably be passed from the committee.
On the other hand, adoption of the resolution is not very possible in the General Assembly even if it passes from the Committee of Foreign Affairs which consists of 45 members.
One of the backers of the resolution, Foreign Affairs Committee member Jim Costa said, “Genocide is not something that we can ignore and forget about. Our country cannot continue its denial policy related to the genocide,” but he also pointed outthat there is not adequate support for the resolution in the General Assembly.
Up to now, 137 members of the U.S. House have announced their support for the resolution. It is stressed that votes of 218 of 435 membersare required for the passage of so called Armenian genocide resolution from U.S. House of Representatives.
Speaker of House Nancy Pelosi had rejected bringing so called Armenian genocide resolution on the agenda of General Assemlby in 2007 unless the support of at least 218 members of the U.S. House is achieved. The resolution was prevented in 2000, by former speaker of the House Dennis Hastert due to strained situation in the Middle East.
Armenian lobbies in United States have accelerated efforts to provide support of members of representatives as many of the representatives state that the resolution will affect Turkish-American relations and Turkish-Armenian rapprochement negatively.
