Defence Minister of Azerbaijan: War inevitable

E-mail Print PDF
Azerbaijan’s defence minister has reiterated that war is inevitable if Armenia does not withdraw from occupied Azerbaijani land.

He made these comments today to the French ambassador to Azerbaijan, Gabriel Keller.

Safar Abiyev and the ambassador discussed bilateral military cooperation and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, ANS Press reports, citing the Defence Ministry press service.

Abiyev said diplomats had failed to produce any results in 15 years of negotiations.

“Azerbaijan cannot wait another 15 years. Now it is the army’s turn and this threat is approaching. If the occupier Armenia does not liberate our land, a great war in the South Caucasus is inevitable,” the defence minister said.

President Ilham Aliyev, Abiyev and other senior officials have commented in recent months that Azerbaijan will resume hostilities to free Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts, if no progress is made in peace talks with Armenia.

During the meeting the French ambassador presented the new military attache in Azerbaijan to the defence minister.
