EU urges Armenia, Turkey to ratify protocols without prerequisites

The European Union urges Armenia and Turkey to ratify and implement protocols on establishment of bilateral relations without prerequisites, said Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Miguel Angel Moratinos.

“The European Union supports the process initiated between Armenia and Turkey and urges the countries to stay loyal to this process. The EU has urged the countries to ratify and implement protocols without prerequisites”, Moratinos told a news conference in Yerevan.

According to Moratinos, EU will support and encourage the Armenian-Turkish process and added that the signing of protocols have become a historical turning point in the relations between the two countries. He said EU wants “to be involved into the Armenian-Turkish process”.

“If there are already the signed documents, the process should continue and the protocols must be implemented”, Moratinos considers.

Spain supports Turkey’s EU integration, Moratinos said.

“Currently, there is a process connected with Turkey’s membership in EU. If Turkey fulfills all provisions facing it, the country will join the European Union. Spain supports Turkey’s EU accession”, Moratinos told a joint news conference with his Armenian counterpart Edward Nalbandian in Yerevan Tuesday.

According to Moratinos, Turkey’s EU membership will be an advantage for the whole region. The Spanish FM also informed that negotiations on the diplomatic settlement of problems facing the country are currently underway with Turkey.

Moratinos noted that the dialogue with Turkey will continue within the framework of Spain’s chairmanship in EU.
