Gorbachev: Karabakh problem too old and complex

E-mail Print PDF
Gorbachev hopes for the united Europe in the issue of the Karabakh conflict settlement.

I do not know what to do there. The foreign and internal borders were defined during the revolution and after it. They were divided the way that made neighbors dependent on each other for making it possible to sow conflict any time and appoint Moscow as an arbiter and legalize the power of the center by such a split, considers USSR ex-president Mikhail Gorbachevanswering readers’ questions in the online interview with.

“The problems have always emerged before and after war. The Karabakh problem is too old and complicated. Azerbaijan and Armenia have accused me of supported one of the parties, but it was not like that. I have always said that such ethnic disputes cannot be settled if one wins and another loses. The parties should come to a consensus. Probably, the united Europe would find it easier to untie the knot,” Gorbachev said speaking about possible recognition of Nagorno Karabakh’s independence by Russia and the variant of the Karabakh conflict settlement he can propose.
