Spokesman for U.S. Department of State Philip Crowley stated that there is not a mutual understanding between Turkey and Armenia regarding to 1915 incidents.
Crowley said, “But we appreciate the bold steps that leaders of both countries made and we continue tourge Turkey and Armenia not to focus on the past but to move forward.”
When a journalist mentioned Crowley that both Turkey and Armenia evaluated the statements of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the U.S. House of Representatives as a support to their own position, Crowley stressed that United States supports the process of normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia. “We believe that there is sufficient field for evaluation of historical truths regarding to incidents that happened decades ago,” said he.
Crowley said, “So, we have not changed our opinion and we urge both countries for implemention of the agreement that was achieved last year in Switzerland. Normalization of relations between two countries is not only towards the interests of Turkey and Armenia but towards the interests of whole region.”
Stressing that United States cannot approach the issue as the loss for one party and gain for another, Crowley said, “U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is engaged with the process. Assistant to Secretary of State Jim Steinberg, Undersecretary Bill Burns, Assistant to Undersecretary Phil Gordon are all in direct contact with Turkish and Armenian administrations.
Therefore, we are continuing to support both sides. We understand the issue is very difficult and emotional. There is not a mutual understanding between Turkey and Armenia regarding to 1915 incidents. But we appreciate the bold steps that leaders of both countries made and we continue to support Turkey and Armenia not to focus on the past but to move forward.”
