So called Armenian genocide resolution is also criticized by political figures in United States.
The resolution related to 1915 incidents which will be voted by Foreign Affairs Committee of U.S. House of Representatives today is criticized by political circles in Washington.
Speaking to TRT, Republican Representative Ed Whithfield said that the resolution will notwork foranything other than damaging Turkish-American relations and creating new problems.
Expressing his disappointment on the resolution, Whitfield said, “The timing of this resolution is very bad asArmenia and Turkey are holding talks now and opening of archives and discussion of issue by historians is possible. I guess Prime Minister Erdogan deserves praise about these initiatives. These are positive steps. In my opinion, U.S. Congress has nothing to do with an incident that had happened in the times of Ottoman Empire. The non-binding resolution is waste of time and is not a good approach. It will damage Turkish-American ties.”
Reminding that similar resolutions were brought on the agenda in previous years but they were not successful, Whitfield said, “Obama does not show any leadership against this resolution, he does not try to prevent its passage. In my opinion, thats a great mistake. The President had made his one of the first visits to Turkey after he was elected as President. Turkey is an important member of NATO andhas troops in Afghanistan. There are issues like Iraq and we have military base in Turkey. Turkey is an important partner of United States commercially too.”
Pointing the attitude of English parliament related to 1915 incidents, Whitfield said, “I do not know why U.S. Congress should intervene an incident that happened years ago under a different leadership. English parliament did not intervene this issue and that is the right attitude.
While there are signed protocols and there is progress in the process, this resolution will probably bring anything other than problems. It is important that this issue should be solved by Turkey and Armenia. There is no need for the assistance of countries like United States.”
