WSJ: Resolution may damage relations

E-mail Print PDF
American Wall Street Journal (WSJ) wrote that resolution that is adopted in Foreign Affairs Committee of U.S. House of Representatives recognizing so called Armenian genocide may damage the relations with Turkey which is a vital ally of United States in the Middle East and the Middle Asia.

Stating that “genocide” voting raised concerns in the defence industry companises like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, United Technologies and Northrop Grumman, WSJ wrote that these companies have cooperation with Turkey in several projects and they worry about losing their jobs. The report reads that several TV and radio channels in Turkeybroadcasted the voting alive and the result evaluated as a blow to the process of rapprochement between Turkey and Armenia.

Reminding that Obama administration did not intervene the process till the last minute, the newspaper stressed that Obama’s attitude against genocide resolution was different than Bush and Clinton administrations. WSJ also reminded that US President Barack Obamamade a phone conversation withTurkish President Abdullah Gul, and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Howard Berman that adoption of the resolution may risk the Turkey-Armenia normalization.

Giving space to the comments of Middle East Technical University (METU) International Relations Department Lecturer Professor Doctor Huseyin Bagcı that it could be announced that Turkey-Armenia normalization has wrecked and borders will not be opened, WSJ wrote that anti-American opinions in Turkey are expected to increase following the adoption of the resolution.
