SPANISH AMBASSADOR TO ANKARA: CATALONIAN PARLAIMENT’S DECISION DOES NOT REFLECT SPANISH OPINION
Spain’s ambassador to Ankara, Joan Clos Matheu said that recognition of allegations of Armenian genocide by the Parliament of Catalonia does not reflect the opinion of Spain regarding to this issue.
Stressing that relations between Turkey and Spain is continued in high level and such resolutions related to 1915 incidents are never brought to the Parliament of central government, Matheu said, “There are regional parliaments in the democratic system of Spain and they are independent to make their own decisions. This is certainly not about the Spanish government. Parliamentarians are independent and that does not mean central government will always support their decisions. This decision certainly does not reflect Spanish opinion. I want to stress that Spain attaches importance to her relations with Turkey. Alliance of Civilizations Project is the best example of that.”
