Armenian-Turkish reconciliation proves easier than Nagorno-Karabakh settlement.
The Armenian-Turkish reconciliation process proves to be easier than the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement: Turkey is more democratic than Azerbaijan, there is no threat for wars, peoples of two countries have contacts, it has its own interests in foreign policy issues, the journalist, writer and an expert on the Caucasus Thomas de Waal told ‘Sivilitas’ panel discussion.
Referring to whether the Armenian-Turkish normalization will contribute to the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement, he said: “Providing we remove Turkey from the poisonous triangle through the Armenian-Turkish rapprochement, this will have a positive impact on the resolution of Nagorno-Karabakh issue.”
Thomas de Waal thinks, Turkey may get involved in Nagorno-Karabakh settlement process as far as the parties are willing this, though, it manages to be involved the process indirectly.
“The Armenian-Turkish normalization will become a catalyst for positive developments, which didn’t occur due to a number of reasons put forth by Turkey. I don’t think Turkey will become a part of Nagorno-Karabakh talks since it will come across problems, though the basic dynamics is to maintain the same course for a long term,” he said.
