Foreign Ministry Spokesman Burak Ozugergin stated that the decision of Catalonian Parliamenton recognition of Armenian genocide allegations does not reflect the opinion of Spain regarding to the issue.
Ozugergin stated that Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs immediately responded to adoption of Armenian allegations in the Parliament of Catalonia and expressedTurkey’s concerns to Spanish and Catalonian officials. He said that both Turkey’s Embassy to Madrid and Consulate General to Barcelona took the initiative and reflected Turkey’s reaction regarding to adoption of so called Armenian genocide.
Ozugergin said, “Foreign Minister Davutoglu discussed the issue with his Spanish counterpart and expressed Turkey’s concerns related to this issue. It is stressed that Turkey condemns recognition of baseless claims and that it is not the job of local or national parliaments to write history.”
Stating that Spanish government announced that recongition of so called Armenian genocide does not reflect view of Spanish government related to the issue, Ozugergin said, “Catalonian Autonomous Government’s President Jose Montilla apologized in behalf of his administration and stressed that the decision was baseless.”
