The relations between Ankara and Stockholm that was harmed with adoption of a so called Armenian genocide resolution in the Swedish Parliament is going to be normalized in short term.
Ankara evaluates the statements of Swedish Prime Minister Frederik Reinfeldt, in which he apologized to Turkey due to the Armenian resolution, as positive. It is reported that Turkey’s ambassador to Stockholm Zergun Koruturk, who was recalled due to the strain in Turkish-Swedish relations, will return to Stockholm.
Sources stress that the time of Turkish ambassador in Ankara is limited although the decision of her return is not yet made. Turkish government reacted positively also to the attitude of Catalonian governmentagainst a similar genocide resolution that was passed from Catalonian Parliament. Diplomatic sources call for attention to the constructive steps of Catalonian government after adoption of “genocide” resolution and they tell that United States government should derive lessons from these attitudes.
Upon approval of so called Armenian genocide in Swedish Parliament, Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt called his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and said that that they do not want to harm their relations with Turkey. He stressed that the decision of Swedish Parliament may be used by the ones who want to undermine Turkish-Armenian rapprochement process and reform movements in Turkey. He also said that Sweden will continue to support Turkey’s EU membership.
