Conservative Party MEP Jacqueline Foster has described the Khojaly tragedy as genocide.
The MEP said she was ready to raise the issue of recognition of the Khojaly genocide in European institutions, according to the US Azerbaijanis Network and UK Azerbaijanis Network (UKAN).
Answering a letter from UKAN members about commemorating the Khojaly genocide in Brussels, Foster said that Azerbaijan could inform Europe about the true events in Khojaly and the Karabakh war. Since neither Azerbaijan nor Armenia are EU members, Foster offered support on the issue at the European Parliament and other EU institutions.
'Naturally, it becomes clear that the genocide in Khojaly is a tragic event which caused death to many people. It is extremely important for the world community and international organizations to do everything within their power to ensure that such evil actions are not repeated. The Conservative Party and the EU support the strengthening of peace, human rights, democracy and the supremacy of law in all regions,' Foster said in her letter of response to the UKAN.
During the night of 25-26 February 1992, 613 Azerbaijani civilians were killed in an attack by Armenian forces, backed by an ex-Soviet regiment, on the town of Khojaly in Nagorno-Karabakh. Most of the victims perished as they fled the town.
