April 13: Critical Date For The Future Of Turkish-Armenian Normalization

E-mail Print PDF
Both Ankara and Yerevan administrations expect steps from each other for continuation of Turkish-Armenian reconciliation. The critical date for normalization process is April 13 as Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan will make a visit to United States.
Armenian President is expected to discuss future of Turkish-Armenian protocols with U.S. President Barack Obama during the visit. Following the visit, Armenia will decide whether to continue or withdraw from the protocols.
The process of protocols between Turkey and Armenia is in impasse. This is the only point that Ankara and Yerevan agree on. On the ther hand, expectations and opinions differ. According to Ankara, justified decision of Armenian constitutional court damaged the protocol process. Turkish officials stress that Armenian court's decision was an operation against the nature and the text of protocols.
In this aspect, Ankara expects Yerevan to guarantee that text of the protocols will be preserved. On the other hand, Yerevan does not agree with this opinion and expects Turkey to announce that the impasse in the process of normalization was due to intense domestic agenda of Turkey. Yerevan has the opinion that amendment in constitution, referendum discussions and general elections in Turkey will elongate the process of normalization.
Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan will make a visit to Washington on April 13 to attend Nuclear Security summit. Sarksyan is expected to meet Barack Obama and discuss future of normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia during his visit to Washington.
