Selcuk University (SU) International Relations Department Lecturer, Professor Doctor Birol Akgun stated that Armenian issue can be resolved only through dialogue.
Speaking at the conference "Yesterday and Today of Armenian Problem", Prof. Dr. Birol Akgun said, "Armenian issue is turned into a very important issue in Turkey's foreign policy. Turkey-Armenia relations continue to occupy the agenda. It is very important to have reliable information on this issue to be able to make right decisions. Turkey trusts its own thesis on Armenian issue. We are calling Armenia to open archives. Turkey has started to discuss the issue sincerely. Politicians and media hold discussions on this issue and important steps are being made towards solution of the problem. Parties of the conflict should sincerely put everything on the table for a healthy decision to be made. I believe the problem can be solved through dialogue."
Another speech maker, Associate Professor Feridun Ata said, "Viewing 1915 incidents in 21st century's Turkey through an emotional window leads us to make mistakes. The incidents have political and legal dimensions but the historical dimension also should be on the agenda. The issue should be discussed sincerely with concrete data. Armenians were used by other countries in the history. They were deceived. They initiated rebellions and they were displaced to Syria and Northern Iraq, which were Ottoman territory. The state provided their needs there. Establishing a state was an impossible dream for them, because they did not have enough population. They chased away the peace with their own hands. The urged "displacement" of Armenians is the truth but allegations of "genocide" are not true. Displacement and genocide are different things."
