Washington DC based Brookings Institution Turkey Project Director Ömer Taspinar stated that no progress should be expected in Turkish-Armenian normalization process before April 24th.
Giving an interview to VOA Turkish, Taspinar commented on the recent meeting between Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan in Washington and said that any progress in the process of normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia should not be expected before April 24th. "It cannot be told that political situation in Turkey is appropriate for ratification of protocols. The agenda is occupied by amendments in constitution," said he.
Commenting on the crisis in Turkish-American relations following the adoption of so called Armenian genocide in the Foreign Affairs Committee of U.S. House of Representatives, Taspinar said, "Armenian resolution in the Congress caused a crisis in Turkish-American relations. Phone conversation between Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Erdogan's decision of coming to Washington to attend Nuclear Security Summit were steps that restored trust and these steps normalized Turkey-US relations in some extent."
"In my opinion, two big tests await Turkish-American relations for next months; Turkey's attitude in United Nations related to economical sanctions against Iran and Armenian issue. We may say that Turkish-American relations are relatively normalized now but there are potential crisis waiting", said he.
