Russian Expert: Turkey not coordinating Caucasus issues with US or Russia

E-mail Print PDF
Turks are ready to play a more active role in the Caucasus, the Russian analyst has said.

I think Turkey does not coordinate any issues on Caucasus either with the United States or Russia, saidYuri Sigov, a political reviewer, chief of department of the Business people magazine in Washington answering the question about compliance of Turkey’s activeness in the South Caucasus with the US and Russian plans regarding this region. Ankara is quite an influential and independent political player in this region and for it the weakened attention of other superpowers is a good chance to strengthen in the region, especially where they were traditionally present and have been dominating for many years. Thus, Turkey will further consolidate its positions here and try to be a mediator between Europe and Caucasus.

The analyst also touched upon the visit of the Turkish premier to the United States where Karabakh conflict was among the main issues on the agenda saying "Turks are ready to play the active role in the Caucasus, in particular, in the resolution of the Karabakh conflict. It has not so many levers, but they have old relations with Azerbaijan and they have recently intensified the dialogue with Armenia. No one knows what they can get from this and how it will affect the process of the Karabakh conflict settlement. But it is important for the United States that Turkey promotes the peace settlement of this problem because America has other issues and it would benefit if any international problems are settled without its special interference.
