Interview with the chairman of the Great Creation Party, MP Fazil Mustafa.
Q: At his meeting with the Armenian president, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey would always support Azerbaijan’s position on Karabakh. Is ratification of the protocols on normalizing relations with Armenia possible in this situation?
A: Today, ratification of the protocols between Turkey and Armenia is not on the agenda. Armenia is currently too relaxed, while Turkey shows by its actions that it will continue to take a single stance and protect Azerbaijan’s interests. Relations with Azerbaijan are important to Turkey, so they cannot ignore our interests.
In turn, we will insist on pressure being put on Armenia and Azerbaijan's interests being taken into account. As for relations between the countries, I think the Armenian-Turkish negotiations will continue. They can be effective only if the superpowers demand that Armenia observe the norms of international law.
Q: What role does the US play in the resolution of the Karabakh conflict?
A: We have recently seen the United States becoming closer to Turkey. The United States, as one of the leading democratic states, has taken a stance to protect Azerbaijan’s interests and we fully support this policy.
Q: What principles should Azerbaijan rely on in resolution of the Karabakh conflict?
A: Azerbaijan must take as its basis primarily the principles of international law. International law is on our side and it supports a fair solution to the problem.
Q: Azerbaijan’s foreign minister and the head of the Nagorno-Karabakh community said in recent interviews that Karabakh Armenians can enjoy the same rights as us. Do you consider the coexistence of the Azerbaijani and Armenian communities possible?
A: This issue should be viewed from different standpoints. Coexistence is possible but only if Armenia returns Azerbaijani land. In turn, Armenia should demonstrate the will to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
Q: Do visits to Nagorno-Karabakh bring resolution of the Karabakh conflict closer?
A: I do not think that the visits have these goals. The Karabakh conflict must be settled and only afterwards will visits be possible.
