PACE President Mevlut Chavushoglu said he would visit Georgia, Russia and Armenia in June.
In a press conference held within PACE spring session and devoted to the results of his visits since taking the office of presidency, Chavushoglu said he intended to discuss the ways of elimination of the results of Georgian-Russian war. Chavushoglu spoke about the ban on Muslim women’s headscarves in France. “PACE Bureau discussed this issue this morning and we recommended to prepare special report. But the Bureau decided to send the proposal to the PACE Committee on Science, Education and Culture and then to prepare special report on Islam and Islamophobia in Europe. Regarding my personal opinion, I am against the ban on headscarves because it is restriction of freedoms. The Council of Europe is always advocating for the freedoms”.
“I will lead the Subcommittee on Nagorno Karabakh personally”
Responding a question on outcomes of his visit to Azerbaijan, Chavushoglu said that political atmosphere in Azerbaijan on the eve of the parliamentary elections was enough positive: “During the meetings in Azerbaijan we touched upon all urgent issues on holding democratic, independent and just elections. We want it very much. We saw the real will of Azerbaijani government in the direction of holding more transparent, democratic and independent parliamentary elections. Representatives of Azerbaijani government promised that they would take all necessary steps in this direction”.
Chavushoglu also noted that he had discussed the issues on political imprisonments and arrested journalists in Baku: “I am waiting for a positive answer on this issue as well. I spoke about it during the meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev”.
Speaking about the activities of the Sub-committee on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Chavushoglu said that he would discuss it with both heads of delegations of the two countries: “I will personally lead this Sub-committee as PACE President after the appointment of the composition of the Sub-committee”.
