French Historian Wins Law Battle Against Armenian Diaspora

E-mail Print PDF
A young French historian, who supports Turkish approach to 1915 incidents, won a law battle against Armenian diaspora in France.
French historian Maxime Gauin, 23, caused the reaction of Armenian community in France when he, in an article, criticized Villeurbanne Mayor for urging a Turkish candidate, Sirma Oran, to recognize so-called Armenian genocide and Armenian Recolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutyun for past crimes including massacres against Muslims and Jews in Anatolia.
Refering to the article of French historian, Movsès Nissanian, municipal counselor of Villeurbanne (biggest city of Lyon’s suburb) and member of Armenian Revolutionary Federation, said during a meeting about the Sirma Oran affair that the French historian Maxime Gauin "is exactly like those who sent Jews to Auschwitz" during the WWII. Following the publication of the article in the web site of Ara Toranian, former spokesman of ASALA (1976-1983) then of dissident group ASALA-RM (1983-1985), diaspora Armenians reviled against French historian.
Delivering the vitriolic messages which insult and defame the historian on the forum of Armenews.com (Toranian's web site) and the record of Nissanian’s statements during the meeting to the court, Maxime Gauin got his share from the insult and assault of fanatic young Dashnaks during the hearings.
The law process was being followed by Armenian media closely. Confirming that he regrets using insulting words against French historian, Nissanian stated that he reproves the acts of terrorism used by ARF and ASALA. When France-Armenia web site published the account of the trial, Armenian readers were chocked by what Nissanian said about terrorism, and called him a coward and "a shame of ARF".
Stressing that the court is not going to make decisions on historical thesis, Lyon court penalized Movses Nissanian with paying 500 Euros of compensation. It should be noted that any member of Armenian media did not give space to the decision of the court although they closely followed the process. The decision is also a victory for Turkish organizations in France as they will be able to sue Armenian diaspora organizations when they insult and defame Turkish people for denying Armenian allegations over 1915 incidents.
