Armenia has problems with freedom of speech

’The situation on television leaves much to be desired.’

“We are where we must be. This is not a coincidence. We have great problems with freedom of speech,” Armenian ombudsman Armen Arutyunyan has commented on the recent report of Freedom House on freedom of speech, Tert.am reported.

He said pluralism is more or less perceivable on the level of printed mass media and internet editions but there are great problems on the level of television.

“The situation on television leaves much to be desired, though sometimes there are programs where the position does not coincide with the official, which is also encouraging,” the ombudsman said.

Under the annual report of Freedom House, Armenia is among the nonfree states by the freedom of mass media.

As for improvements fixed by the organization, Arutyunyan said this is just a tendency. “Today, it is impossible to say that we guarantee the freedom of speech,” he concluded.
