Isolated Armenia in Deadlock

E-mail Print PDF
In an article published by England based forum site openDemocracy, Haroutiun Khachatrian said that Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan attaches importance to the normalization of relations with Turkey as it can be beneficial both politically and economically.
"The biggest obstacle is the dispute with the eastern neighbour Azerbaijan over Nagorny Karabakh. Azerbaijan closed its borders to Armenia and blocked all the connection including railways. Armenia's western neighbour which has ethnical connections with Azerbaijan, behaved in the same manner. Turkey also closed its borders and laid an embargo on Armenia and it rejects to establish diplomatic relations. Therefore, there remains only two countries for Armenia to contact with the outer world; Georgia and Iran. These two routes are not always safe as it was proved during the conflict between Russia and Georgia in August 2008. If Armenia can succeed to change the situation of "besieged fortress", that might affect every dimension of life very positively.
The first gesture began when Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan invited Turkish President Abdullah Gul to watch a soccer game in Yerevan. After a year, Armenia and Turkey signed protocols towards normalziation of relations in Zurich. But protocols could not be implemented because Turkey was undesirous to ratify the protocols in the parliament. In an unprecedented way, all the superpowers supported the process of normalization. Interests of United States, EU, Russia and France may vary in the region but they all urged Turkey because they all believed that normalization with Armenia would make the region safe and stable.
The latest initiative was the meeting between Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan in Washington on April 1. The meeting of two leaders and the meetings that Turkish and Armenian leaders held with U.S. President Barack Obama were fruitless. It seems that Turkey is on its previous stance, connecting the progress in normalization of relations to the resettlement of Nagorny Karabakh problem.
Time will show whether all the bridges between two countries are burned or not," said he.
