Barroso Calls Turkey, Armenia to Continue Dialogue

E-mail Print PDF

"We continue to support the process of normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia," President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso said at a joint conference with Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan yesterday.

Calling Turkey and Armenia to regain the acceleration which they lost after signing protocols, Barroso called two countries to continue dialogue and ratify protocols without setting preconditions and within reasonable time frame. Supporting the statements of Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Barroso called "elections" in Nagorno-Karabakh "illegal" and said, "We will continue to support the negotiations in the leadership of OSCE Minsk Group to find a peaceful solution to the problem. The solution of the problem should include return of the refugees, property rights, the right of self determination, security assurances and withdrawal of military forces."

Responding to a question over Turkish-Armenia protocols, Barroso said, "I have already told Armenian President that we cannot speak in behalf of Turkey. As the EU, we cannot talk in behalf of Turkey or Armenia. The thing we can and are doing is to call Turkey and Armenia to make efforts for a real rapprochement. This is the most constructive policy that EU can follow."
