E-mail Print PDF

Argentinian President called Prime Minister Erdogan to apologize following the cancelation of Erdogan's scheduled visit to Argentina within the context of his South America tour. Turkish Takvim newspaper reported that the apology was not enough to convince Erdogan.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who canceled his visit to Argentina after Buenos Aires Autonomous Administration avoided to open a previously scheduled Ataturk monument upon the pressure of Armenian diaspora, did not accept the high level apology of Argentina. It is reported that Argentinian President Kirchner sent a letter to PM Erdogan as the PM was preparing the schedule of Latin America tour. Kirchner pledged Turkish Prime Minister that Ataturk monument which was removed due to the pressure of Armenian diaspora in the country will be restored in Jorge Newbury Park in Buenos Aires. Erdogan welcomed the proposal and added the opening ceremony on his program.

Bad news came while Turkish delegation was in Brazil. Prime Minister Erdogan learnt that Buenos Aires Autonomous Adminisration canceled opening of Ataturk monument as a result of the reaction of Armenian diaspora in the city. Prime Minister Erdogan was directly informed by Argentinian President Kirchner over phone. Apologizing over the incident, Kirchner said, "I understand the reaction of Turkey and I share your opinion. But I cannot interfere in the internal affairs of autonomous administration. Continue your program in Argentina". Prime Minister Erdogan did not accept the high level apology and said that the attitude of Argentinian administration is unacceptable.
